Placemark

Making maps of specific locations using Google Earth is useful when we want highlight of an area of work, such as location of existing CCTV camera or location plan of traffic light. The workflow is simple, we take coordinates of some specific point, input coordinate in Google Earth, put a placemark, and repeat again until your map completed with your pinned placemark.
Disclaimer : I am not an expert for GIS, Map etc. I just want to share my efficient workflow when I make a simple Google Earth map with placemark on it.

Take Coordinates
Either you survey directly on the field or using Google Maps/Google Earth, make sure using Latitude/Longitude (LatLong)Coordinate because I think it way easier when you edit coordinate data using Excel. Although you can directly get coordinates using Google Earth, I prefer using Google Maps first because the User Interface (UI) is very intuitive instead of Google Earth, which is a complex one. In Google Maps, you can click a point of the map, anywhere, and directly get a LatLong coordinate. After that, you can copy the coordinate and paste it in Google Earth.

Find a place
Click specific point you want to put placemark
Copy the coordinate
Paste the coordinate on Google Earth

Insert The Placemark
Before inserting the placemark, I usually make a folder for my specific needs, so it is separated with other works. For placing the placemark directly to the coordinate, I still can’t find the menu to do that, so I click placemark and adjust its position on the pinned coordinate. Maybe some readers know how to solve this, feel free to comment.

Create a folder
Choose the name of folder
Insert the placemark (click pin-like menu). Adjust the position to the previous coordinate.
The placemark now under the folder created before

Export to KMZ Format

What is KMZ format? This article is well-explained about KMZ format. In short, we can use the collection of placemarks with created before for further treatment, like sharing with others, or using it in another apps. For me usually is to share with others, it’s quite handy since it wrapped in one small size file and can be imported back to Google Earth app on another person PC.

Right click on the folder and choose ‘Save Place As’
Choose name and specific folder
Voila!

Google Earth is handy for my needs to present the map data. It is free to use and easy to install in every operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux). Maybe it’s a matter of taste for User Interface, but I find it a little bit of complex. Prefer using Google Maps for simple task, so I use it both.
Thanks for read my article, hope it will help you!
